This September, WXYC sat down to chat with Geordie Greep about his upcoming projects.

WXYC: So, we're here with WXYC at Hopscotch, and we're here with Geordie Greep!

Geordie Greep: Geordie Greep, that's me.

WXYC: Okay, so how are you liking Hopscotch so far?

GG: I mean, it was good. It's like the first show of the new tour. The tour starts today. So, it's the first show, and, you know, we didn't rehearse, so this show was almost like a rehearsal, but it was good. I mean, I enjoyed it. I mean, how is it, it's a couple days festival, right? You guys all live here, right? I'm guessing.

WXYC: Yeah, we’re from the area.

GG: Right, and do you come here every year, this festival?

WXYC: Almost every year.

GG: And it’s a good one?

WXYC: It's a good one. Always a good time.

GG: Okay, yeah, it seems good. Seems cool.

WXYC: I've heard that you are working on a new album. Does it have an even newer sound than the last album you released?

GG: Newer and older. It has more depth to the sound, I would say. I would say it's more three-dimensional and has more kinds of … I don't know. With the last album, I was trying to explore loads of my favorite different types of music in a very brash way, very kind of straight in. And with this new album, I've been trying to go a bit further into the specifics of what I really like about those types of music more subtly.

WXYC: Oh, could you tell us what specifics you like about that type of music?

GG: Well, you know, it depends on each track. But, like, it's more in-depth if I'm really trying to make music on this album that is very melodic, I would say. So, let's see. So, it goes into that depth of trying to make stuff that can really be quite beautiful.

WXYC: I have heard your past stuff, even in the stuff with Black Midi, and you have had such creative lyrics, I would say. So, this time it's going to be more, would you even say, like, tranquil or just melodic?

GG: Well, it's like, the music on this new album is more and more kind of subtle and complex and has more things going on, but, yeah, it's one of those things. It's not finished yet, so who knows what direction it may take, but it's getting there, and I want to make it at least 10 times as good as the first album, which it is well on the way to.

WXYC: Well, that is awesome. Also, going back to the lyrics you like are very good at making. What's your creative process with creating lyrics?

GG: I don't know. The thing is, if I did have a creative process, it would be useful, because it's something you can repeat, right? If I feel like with any song, musically or lyrically, if you start going into a routine and trying to count on the same stuff, you end up with the same results.

Every song I’ve finished that I really like —- the lyrics or music —- has come about through a different sort of process. It feels different every time, and it feels like a eureka moment every time. I think the only true answer is just to stay busy and to stay active and to stay finishing things. Whether they're good or not —it doesn't matter, as long as you're doing [it], turning things out, trying to finish things, the standard slowly goes up. And then you end up with more hits than you would waiting for inspiration to strike and waiting to come up with something good. You know what I mean?

WXYC: I know what you mean. That was really beautiful. Thank you for talking to us.

GG: Thanks very much. Thanks for coming to the show.

This is Geordie Greep. You're listening to WXYC Chapel Hill. It's a nice radio station, check it out, and enjoy.
