Fredericksburg native, Philadelphia connected, and sometimes Chapel Hill residing Daniel Bachman is the featured artist on tonight's show. Bachman, even at his young age, is one of the finest fingerstyle guitarists around, with a sound reminiscent of the Takoma School musicians and his mentor, the late Jack Rose.

Arista/Freedom Records is the focus of this week’s Thursday Night Feature on WXYC. The label, founded by producer Alan Bates in 1968 before being purchased by Arista, threw economic viability to the wind and distributed many of the early 1970s jazz world’s cutting edge artists, making their music accessible to fans both in small towns and big cities. Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Stéphane Grapelli, and Julius Hemphill are a handful of the many innovative and adventurous artists who contibute to the Arista/Freedom discography. Will Vizuete hosts, nine to midnight, this Thursday, January 16th, only on WXYC!
TONIGHT at 9PM: Sports Rap will be interviewing Mary Willingham and Jay Smith live on WXYC!
Mary Willingham is the learning specialist, researcher, and whistleblower who has been an important figure in the athletic/academic fraud scandal over the past year and a half. Very recently, she has been in the national and state news again, discussing her experience and findings with regard to reading levels of players in revenue sports at UNC. University administrators and high profile members of the AD alike have reacted strongly and negatively to her comments about her research this week. She is writing a book with History Professor Jay Smith, an outspoken critic of how the University handles athletics.
