Tonight’s Thursday Night Feature on WXYC presents the multifaceted work of classical guitarist, experimental composer, and proprietor of the Penguin Café [Orchestra], Simon Jeffes. Delicate, driving, fantastical, and eclectic, his music incorporates folkloric and classical instrumentation into avant-garde pieces, always venturing to alloy disparate sounds in a way that might engage audiences with his multiple musical influences through pieces at once charming and sublime. Jeffes's collaborative repertoire includes Brian Eno, the Royal Ballet, Baaba Maal, and the Sex Pistols. Tune in nine to midnight to hear host Andy S.
Avant-garde trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith is the focus of tonight's Thursday Night Feature on WXYC. Smith explores the symbiotic relationship between music and social movements, particularly the Civil Rights movement, and his compositions both comment on and contribute to historical events. Starting with last year's Ten Freedom Summers, a lifelong project that includes many pieces composed in the Civil Rights era, we'll backtrack through Smith's oeuvre, from his early Chicago years to recent works.
